New way back to native culture
PROJECT DESCRIPTION.
The merge of national traditions with the European culture in the city at the
junction of Europe and Asia has revealed the unique nature of the entrance
paintings. External impulses, both ideological as well as stylistic, which would
fruitfully assimilate and transform in the national environment, in the XIX
century would acquire the "Tiflis"-urban character. The Renaissance, Gothic,
Moorish and Modernist reminiscences would revealed not only in the ecstatic
décor and painting of Tbilisi entrances, but also in the architecture of the
entire city and would lay basis for European-urban phenomenon. The Tbilisi
motifs were created on the basis of versatile and interesting findings.
The tradition and the present are in the systematic and dynamic interaction. A lot of the reality of the Georgian Art now belongs to History. Only little remains of the unique paintings of Tbilisi entrances. The project concept does not envisage the restoration of these paintings but rather a new presentation of them. In particular, Georgian artists will continue the work of the members of the "The Fraternity of Painters". Tbilisi artists will paint four unpainted entrances of Tbilisi. They each represent their culture and united by the desire to apprehend the substance of painting, explore and unveil its secrets, ancient technique, go back to ancestral knowledge. The value of the folk art and the synthesis of the greatest styles in the world can be viewed within the context of the world culture and contains multiple layers of national cultures. The priority of the artists united within the project relates to the cognition of these layers. This is the case when the time and location of the piece of art in the cultural space determine the work of the artist. On one side this is the "horizontal" crossing of the signals coming from the history of culture. On the other side this is the tendency of the modern art to reveal wide spectrum of esthetic initiatives. The "actual art" moves to Tbilisi entrances and remains as an eternal exhibit participating in the process of harmonious development of Tbilisi society. The discussion on the role of art the progress of the socium is not necessarily required. The critical state of culture directly affects the process of its spiritual deterioration. We consider the esthetic renovation of the dwelling entourage to be of a great cultural importance, which would involve the entire society of Tbilisi in this cultural act.
Project Site: Tbilisi, Mtatsminda, particularly in the vicinity of the Freedom Square (Tavisuplebis Moedani) four old entrances will be painted. The unique, charachteistic Tbilisi entrances at 3/5,3/5a, 11, 18, 19,Tabidze St. will get a new breath for the XXI Century.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES.
It is difficult to evaluate the actuality of the project. On one side the existing condition of social problems the cultural sphere has also undergone changes. The look of Tbilisi has also changed in conformity with the demands of the new life. In this situation the specific and unique appearances characteristic to Tbilisi only, is gradually disappearing. What is interesting is the urban images existent in the depth of the centuries-old national tradition and merged with the achievements with the world progressive art and not the eclectic co-existence of the old and new. The objective of the project is to beautify organically the "landscape" interiors of the city within its diverse esthetic range, which has been transferred to generations throughout the centuries.
Existence of tradition in contemporary art of the background of the integration of culture Georgia, the attitude of society towards artistic heritage-solution of these problems can be facilitated by funding the project. Moreover, the project is aiming not only at stylistic and esthetic aspects of social consciousness, but also at those dramatic and cathartic events, which are so frequent in Tbilisi.
